Lots of excitement since my last entry...
Right after I finished my last entry (the rant below which I've decided to make private) Mark came hobbling upstairs to tell me that he was stung by a centipede as he was taking out the trash! :0 I looked at his foot and it was completely red and swollen and he was definitely in some serious pain! :( I spent the next 15 minutes or so arguing with him - trying to get him to the emergency room, but he was doing the "Japanese" thing - the not wanting to cause a commotion because it was embarrassing and he refused to go...

Finally at midnight I told him that I was taking him to the emergency room whether he liked it or not. Luckily, we live about 5 minutes away from the hospital, so I drove him there (listening to him complain about going the entire way there - thankfully the ride was pretty short)

When we arrived, there was an empty waiting room, with only one other person there. I picked up the red phone on the wall that was labeled "Doctor line" and told the person who picked it up, that I was bringing in my husband, who was stung by a centipede. Within minutes someone opened the door and called out, "Centipede sting?" Mark raised his hand. "Come this way," she said and he hobbled into the examining area.

As I sat in the waiting area, the other man who was there was sitting next to the automatic doors to the waiting room. He was eating a bag of chips and whenever he'd put a chip in his mouth, he'd set off the sensor on the door and the automatic doors would open. It was amusing for a little while and then I wondered how he didn't realize that he was the one opening the door. Each time the door opened, he'd look at it as if to wonder if someone was coming in...

The doctor gave Mark a tetnus shot, and a prescription for vicodin as well as a "spiffy ice pack" (Mark's description). I think he'll be staying home from work tomorrow since the doctor told him that the pain usually lasts for about three days and that the vicodin would probably make him a bit loopy. Other than that, he's fine. He ended up being pretty happy that I forced him to go - but it might just be because his pain medication was kicking in. ;)

I'm off to get some rest, it's been a pretty eventful day.

I'm glad Mark's okay!

Thanks Karen! :) And I told Mark that people had commented to show their concern and he was very touched. :D

Poor Mark! How is his foot today?

And making your entry is just plain mean. :D I saw it there when I got up & have like 5 min to glance at LJ. I planned to read it indepth while sitting here eating egg-to-sneeze-into-my-hair and poof it was gone! :D
Mrs Beanshuman_beans on September 21st, 2005 12:41 pm (UTC)
p.s. What a doofus with the door! I would've found it humorous the first few times and then crabby me probably would've become annoyed.

Men are such a pain when it comes to dealing with health/medical issues...and they are almost always happier that they eventually listen to their wives. So frustrating!

That story about the automatic doors and the chip thing was too funny!
Sheri: Sheri - yahoo iconshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:44 am (UTC)
Ah men! :P They think they can handle everything by themselves. Once Mark gashed the front of his leg on a tent spike and when I told him to go to the first aide station he told me, "Just leave me alone so I can clot." :P I'm glad he went this time, though. :)

That man near the door was too funny! HOW he could've NOT know that he was the one opening those doors is beyond me! It was pretty entertaining the first few times it happened, though. :D

Poor Mark. :( I hope he feels better soon! And I'm sure that it was not because of the pain medication that he felt happy for forcing him to go. :)

The story with the door and the man sounds funny to me.

I only saw your other entry very short before the computer stopped working and it was gone when the computer worked again.

Please take care, Sheri. Big *hugs* and love to you

Sheri: Familyshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:47 am (UTC)
Thanks, Sabine. :) I told Mark that you were all concerned for him and he was very touched. :) And he feels about a 100 times better today, thank goodness.

Sorry that I made that last entry private... I've been feeling like I've been a little too negative lately and I thought I should stop it because it's not like me at all.

Thanks for the *HUGS* Sabine! Big *HUGS* back to you and love to you and your fuzzy babies! :D

That sucks about Mark being stung, hope he feels better soon. Sorry I missed your rant!
Blancheblanche on September 21st, 2005 03:23 pm (UTC)
And I mean that not in a "gawking at others' rants'" way, as far as missing the rant. You feel better, too.

STUNG BY A CENTIPEDE?! Yowsa! Hope he's doing well today!
Sheri: Mark & Sheri 1999shutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:49 am (UTC)
Thanks so much for your comment, Ashley! Mark's doing MUCH better today and he was so touched that you all were so concerned about him. :)

Ow for Mark! I hope he's feeling better today -- I'm sure the Vicodin will help him out in that aspect.

And that guy with the chips and the door...too funny! It's like a Seinfeld episode or something.
Sheri: Sheri - yahoo iconshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:51 am (UTC)
Thanks for your comment! Mark feels so much better today - and the vicodin really did help him out, especially by allowing him to fall asleep that first night.

And haha! It did sort of seem like a Seinfeld episode as it was happening. :) It was hilarious! :D

Poor Mark. OUCH! I hope he's doing better today. :) Vicodin doesn't work for me. It doesn't even phase me. So I don't understand why people say they get loopy while taking it. :D
Sheri: Mark & Sheri 1999shutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:52 am (UTC)
Thanks for your comment, Carrie. :) The vicodin helped Mark a lot the first night - I think if he didn't have it, he wouldn't have been able to sleep with all the pain. He was a bit loopy, though. ;)
ajayne on September 21st, 2005 08:43 pm (UTC)
Oh ouch! I had no idea that centipedes had stingers. I am glad you got him to go to the ER though. Man... sometimes they are so stuborn. ;) Joe is the same way. It's so annoying. :D I hope his foot is better soon.
Sheri: Familyshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:56 am (UTC)
Awww, thanks Andrea! Men are really stubborn! I told the story above, but once he got a HUGE gash in his leg from a tent spike at Relay for Life. I told him to go to the first aide station, but he just told me, "Leave me alone so I can clot in peace." :P Men! :P

OMG, that is awful. I haven't seen any centipede in our backyard, yet. But we do have black widows and those things I hate so much. They scare me so much. I'm glad you took Mark in the hospital. :)
Sheri: Sydney - couchshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:57 am (UTC)
Yikes! A black widow would completely freak me out! I have an almost irrational fear of spiders! :P We have quite a few centipedes in our backyard - the scary thing is I worry about Sydney finding one and possibly getting stung one day. :P

OOOOOOH NO! Wow! What is it with the "japanese" thing anyway? Uhm..yeah, I agree. ;-)

I'm glad he's okay!
Sheri: Sydney - couchshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 06:59 am (UTC)
I know! My Mom has that "Japanese shame" thing too! It's really bad because I suspect that many people in Hawaii have that and might forego medical attention because they're ashamed that it'll turn out to be nothing.
lindasings on September 22nd, 2005 12:41 am (UTC)
Phew!
I'm so glad you made Mark get medical attention. I just yesterday talked to a friend who told me of a friend of hers who's cruise ship stopped for the day at Fanning Island. He stepped on something in the water and refused to see the ship's doctor. Three days later he was dead. Whatever it was he stepped on spread a skin-eating bacteria. The M.D. said there was no question his life would have spared if he'd gone to the doctor right away.

Re: Phew!
Wow - that's just awful about your friend's friend! :( I'm telling this story to Mark and embedding it in my memory the next time something happens and I want him to go to the doctor! My goodness!

I'm glad Mark is going to be okay. How scary. Poor guy. I hate when guys don't want to see the docotor though.

I hope whatever your rant was about, that you are feeling better now.
Sheri: Sydney - couchshutterbug93 on September 23rd, 2005 07:01 am (UTC)
Men are the absolute worst when it comes to going to the doctor! :P
