Feeling much better, I really need Tivo this week, and I think I created another QaF fan. ;)
First of all, thank you all so much for your well wishes and comments in my last entry. I'm actually feeling much better this morning and will be attempting to tackle a full day of work - whether or not I'm able to be productive is yet to be seen. ;P

On a completely separate note, I REALLY need to get Tivo! Our house doesn't have a single working VCR these days and it hasn't been too much of a problem since it's rare that I even watch TV, much less want to keep it for posterity... but Mark just reminded me last night that we won't be home on Thursday night to see the finale of "Celebrity Duets". We'll actually be seeing our local production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" - which I'd been looking forward to seeing for a long time now. I'm REALLY not one for reality TV, but shoot... Hal Sparks is in the finals and I FINALLY decided to watch it and - now I can't. Boo! I'd ask someone at work to tape it, but with no VCR, what would I watch it on? :P Well, I'll have to settle for watching the Friday show and hoping that they do a re-cap OR look on You Tube - hopefully someone posts a clip. :P

Eventually we'll probably have to get something like Tivo and my question to all of you is - should we invest in Tivo or a stand alone DVR? I know what the answer will probably be, but I'm kinda ignorant about TV technology (not having turned my TV on in the longest time...) that I'm not sure about the advantages or disadvantages to each. Any advice you might be able to give me on either would be greatly appreciated. :)

Speaking of Hal (which I wasn't really doing, but any excuse is a great one to bring him up) my Mom actually enjoyed the first DVD of Queer as Folk that I let her borrow. Aside from her "I can't believe they have this show on cable" remarks to me every few seconds, she said the writing and especially the acting were incredible and she's already asking to borrow the other episodes. :) I think I've created another QaF fan. :)

Well, I'm off to start my day... LOTS of meetings and interviews today... oh joy. ;P I do have to keep reminding myself how much I really do love my job. :) Hope you all have a lovely day! :) *HUGS*

Tivo is a DVR. I don't know if you are using over-the-air, cable, or satellite, but I'd start with your provider. I know DirecTV is providing their own DVRs now (I don't think DirecTivos are still available). Most cable providers have a captive DVR that works with their system, being able to handle decoding of encrypted signals. But yes, get one. You might also consider coupling it with a DVD Burner, if there isn't one in the DVR, to make permanent copies of things, usage restrictions permitting.

Haha! See how ignorant I am about these things? I thought Tivo was a form of DVR that didn't allow burning and archiving and was just used for replay purposes. I thought a DVR was more archival. Shows you how little I know...

There aren't many technology things that I'm a total putz about, but this is one of them. :P

Both DVRs and Tivos save to an internal hard disk, and will delete older stuff to record newer stuff, if permitted. For permanent archiving, you need to save to VCR or DVD. Some DVRs have a built-in DVD burner (which has its own ideosyncracies). Most permit you to run the output through your VCR or DVD burner, and just record it analog as you would off the TV.

You might see if someone can record tonight's show for you. We would, but I think we're burning both Survivor and CSI tonight, as well as the premier of Ugly Betty.

TiVo owns my soul. In a good way :)

From what I've heard, TiVo has a nicer user interface than the DirectTV DVRs (now that they don't get their DVRs from TiVo). If you get your cable/satellite from a company that doesn't have a good deal on a DVR, then get a TiVo. You will need to plug it into a phone line so it can download your program info every couple of weeks, but you don't have to leave it plugged into the phone all the time. Do check that there is a local number for TiVo since it'll take several minutes each time. There is a monthly charge, something like $12, which is totally worth it. (and if you can get a DVR from your cable/satellite company, check the pricing and all, since introductory offers obviously fade out after three months or so.)

TiVo will revolutionise how you watch TV, since you're not already a videotape person. However, unlike with a VCR, you cannot watch one show live while taping another one. You can watch a stored show while taping a new show, but you can't switch the channel on the TV. However the picture quality and not having to label and find videotapes is a definite plus.

Of course, it's just a lot cheaper in the short run to get a $60 VCR. I don't know what we paid for our TiVo two years ago, but it wasn't cheap, and we got a new drive for it after a while so we can store more programs on better quality, so that wasn't cheap, either. But I love it with every fibre of my being. It owns my soul *g*.

One nice things about the DirecTivo is two tuners, so you can watch one thing while recording another. Note that you can always watch different recorded content while recording something else.

Thank you SO much for your comment and the great information! It's certainly given me a lot to think about. :) And I doubt if I could do any of this before Thursday night, but it's VERY good to know because Mark has been talking about possibly getting Tivo for a while now. Thanks so much for your comment!!

I wish I could offer advice on the TiVo or DVR situation, but I'm not technologically-inclined and I don't know nearly enough about either of them. :)

I love how open your mom is to watching QaF! That's wonderful! :)

Have a great day!!

Thanks for your comment, Karen!! I know absolutely nothing about them either - the information from the kind folks who posted was extremely valuable to me. :)

My Mom is VERY liberal and very open to watching it... I was a little surprised at just HOW open minded, though. :)

Re: Celebrity Duets
I've had to go back and watch clips of it on You Tube because I missed all the previous episodes. I can't believe that I didn't realize Hal was on the show until just recently and then when I found out and made it a point to watch, I couldn't... :P My timing's all off, I tell ya!

I did watch the results show tonight... even if it was the last episode. :P

I'm happy that you are feeling better, Sheri!

Today at work (there was a short moment when I could have a look at LJ) I saw that you felt not so well. Unfortunately, I've not had enough time to write a comment. :( But, even if this time difference still confuses me, today evening at home to hear that you feel better gives my day a very nice end. :)

It seems that QaF is kind of infectious. ;) I'm glad your Mom enjoyed to watch it. And I wish I could offer any advice in regard to TiVo - well, I've read a little about it but that is all - I'm sorry.

Hope you have a nice day, Sheri! Much love and big *hugs* to you.

Thanks so much for your sweet comment, Sabine! And please don't apologize for not commenting earlier!! I know we can't all possibly be on LJ all the time. Thanks so much for your nice wishes!!

QaF is very addicting!! The storylines are well written, the acting is incredible... it's SUCH a good show! And I was very surprised that my Mom really liked it as well.

Hope you're having a nice weekend, Sabine!! Big *HUGS*

Hi, I run tivolovers. I think you could guess what I'd recommend. ;-)

As others said, TiVo is a DVR, just like a cable DVR. But the cable DVR is a Yugo and the TiVo is a Lexus. TiVo has many, many more features, and a much friendlier and more powerful user interface.

I can break it down, but I don't want to dump a lot of info on you unless you want me to. :-)

Thanks so much for your comment!! My hubby and I are definitely going to be investing in something soon - thanks for the information!!

We don't have Tivo here :( so I can't comment on what that is like.. and well, we don't have a DVR either, but I'd love one! Although, I don't want to get rid of my VCR because I have years and years of tapes!! :(

Your mom is so awesome! :D

Oh my, I have years and years of tapes here too - none of which I could play anymore with no VCR... I even have tapes that date back to my Danny / Michelle (GL) obsession over 8 years ago! :P

And my Mom is so funny!! I love that she's open to watching QaF! :)

All I can say is that Tivo ROCKS!

I've been hearing a lot of good things about it. :) I wish I could've gotten it before last night's "Celebrity Duets" though... :P
