Waking up to a huge quake and no electricity...
...it wasn't exactly the way I thought I'd spend my Sunday... This morning Mark & I woke up to a 6.5 earthquake at about 7am... Stuff was falling off of our shelves and the bed was shaking like crazy. :P Poor Sydney must've been wondering what the heck was going on... After having lived in Santa Barbara for about 4 years, earthquakes really aren't new to me... but this one actually lasted for quite a while - and was pretty freaky!

After the first aftershock (which I later heard was a 4.5 quake), we immediately lost power. For the next 8 hours we were powerless, with only a portable battery-operated radio to tell us what was going on. Apparently the entire island lost power and thankfully it appears that there doesn't seem to be any major structural damage and no real reports of serious injuries... I've spoken with all of our family and everyone seems to be okay...

Thank you all so much for all of your concern about the quake!! When the power came back on, the first thing I did was check email and there were so many concerned messages here and on MySpace for us out here - you guys are the best!! Big *HUGS* to you!!!

I'm so happy to see you post!! Besides worrying about you, of course I worried about my parents. I knew that as soon as you posted the power was back on. I was glued to CNN during their live coverage of it. I have text msg'd my folks but I haven't called yet since the news said not to tie up the phone lines. I wonder if it's ok to call now?
Mrs Beanshuman_beans on October 16th, 2006 02:01 am (UTC)
Hmmm, I just called and the phone rang & rang -- the answering machine didn't even pick up. Maybe they don't have power back?
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 02:15 am (UTC)
Hmmmm... our power just went on when I posted the message... Maybe it hasn't fully been restored to all of Ewa yet. Maybe they went out to buy water or food? Lots of people were standing in line to buy water when the power went out... I'll be thinking of them!! Is there anything I can do for you since I live here??
Mrs Beanshuman_beans on October 16th, 2006 02:25 am (UTC)
Thanks so much for your offer! If I need you I will certainly holler.

I was just able to talk to them via cell phone. The power is still out at their house. They heated some water for cup noodles on a butane type stove thing that they're afraid of. :D They seemed to be in good spirits. The call kept fading in and out until finally it did drop. I was happy to hear their voices tho'!
Sheri: Sheri - yahoo iconshutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 02:30 am (UTC)
Oh thank goodness!! I'm so glad that they're okay!! I was worried with you! Just spoke with my Mom and she says Pearl City got electricity back at about 2pm... What was the first thing she did?? Cook rice, of course! :) Haha! *HUGS*
Mrs Beanshuman_beans on October 16th, 2006 02:43 am (UTC)
On the CNN coverage I watched today they showed folks shopping...long lines & only a few people allowed in at once. One lady that they interviewed said she cam to get rice, she had no rice! That would so be me!
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 02:16 am (UTC)
Thanks so much for your concern Rita!! If there's anything I can do here to help you get in touch with your parents, please email me! *HUGS*

*yikes* I heard about it and wondered about you and Charlie, not sure if you know Charlie... I know you're all right but haven't heard from Charlie yet. I knoe quakes very well and I get over em pretty quickly so I hope that you and Mark do 2 and the aftershocks stop.
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 02:18 am (UTC)
Thanks for your comment, Doug!! I was pretty used to earthquakes when I was living in California, but haven't felt one in years - so this was pretty freaky!! Thankfully I've spoken with all of our family and they all seem to be doing okay - powerless, but okay nonetheless.

I'm glad to hear you're OK. I just heard about the earthquake (I've been cleaning the house all day and didn't look at the news). Stay safe.
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 02:19 am (UTC)
Thanks so much!! Thankfully all of our family seems to be doing fine - they all still don't have electricity, but thankfully they're safe.
ilenebook on October 16th, 2006 02:14 am (UTC)
I was wondering how you were doing. The news said noone was killed but many were hurt so I did worry. So glad you are ok.
Did the doggie freak out?
Mine would.
Hugs.
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 02:21 am (UTC)
Thank you so much, Ilene!! My poor dog was pretty freaked out at first - then she went back to sleep and it was our turn to freak out... Thankfully we've spoken with all of our family and it seems that everyone is fine. Big *HUGS* to you!!
ilenebook on October 16th, 2006 02:36 am (UTC)
Poor dog. Poor you but even more...poor people whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
I am glad (selfishly) that there was not a tsunami..cuz we'd be the target I think...or is it Japan quakes that could get us? It is just such a relief that you weren't hurt.
Now if the island will just behave and let you get some sleep tonight.

So glad to hear you are ok!!! :) Jenny is in Japan trying to get hold of Su Gim. She worries he is stuck in some elevator somewhere! ^_^ Are the phones working for you yet? Mobile phones....
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 09:06 am (UTC)
Thanks, Smitha!! Sorry about Jenny not being able to get a hold of Su Gim!! :( I hope he's okay! :( The cell phones were working throughout the power outage, but it was SOOO hard to get through since everyone was calling each other shortly after the earthquake...
ajayne on October 16th, 2006 03:21 am (UTC)
I heard about the earthquake but I wasn't near the computer so I couldn't check up on you until now. Glad to hear you're all OK, as is your family. Very scary... reminds me of 1989 here in SF. *HUGS* Glad you're safe!
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 09:07 am (UTC)
Thanks, Andrea!! I'm just thankful that all my family is safe! The power outage was pretty bad, but thankfully there were no real serious injuries! Thanks so much for your comment!

So glad you're okay!

I finally got through the phone lines to my family in Kailua. They got through it okay. Some bad cuts from the broken glass (I don't think they even own a pair of closed-toe shoes), but nothing serious.
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 16th, 2006 09:09 am (UTC)
Thanks, Linda!! I didn't know that you had family in Kailua!! Thankfully there was no major damage in our neighborhood - the biggest thing in our area was not having power for 8 hours... Thankfully we spoke with our family and they're all fine as well.

I'm glad you're okay Sheri! Nothing fell out of our shelves or anything. Just everything was shaking, a lot.

HAHAHAH, I just had one person message me and ask me if I was okay. LOL

Oh my gosh, I'm glad to hear that you're okay, Rayna!! Thankfully the power returned to our place at about 3:30pm... We haven't even tried to leave the house today - too afraid to travel the roads without street lights... Thanks for your comment - I'm so glad to hear that you're okay!! *HUGS*

Oh I'm so glad you're okay, Sheri! I heard about the quake on the news, but I was away over the weekend and didn't have internet access. But when I saw your post, I knew you were fine! Poor Sydney must've been terrified... :(

I was glad to hear my sister read this to me while I was lying own for my back pain. I thought about you and Mark, and Sydney as soon as my mom told me about the quake. She said "I hope Sheri is okay... they had an earthquake." HUGS glad you're okay, and glad that you're an old pro when it comes to quakes. I guess California is good for something... :)

Thanks so much for your comment, Laura!! And please thank your Mom for her concern too - that's so sweet! Even with all the earthquakes that I've experienced in Santa Barbara (and a few in LA - like that one in Westwood in 2001 - we were talking to Chad Brannon outside of 1776 when it struck!!) nothing felt like what we had yesterday morning - it was pretty freaky! Thanks so much for your comment!! *HUGS*

Hi Sheri, I heard about this on the news this morning, so I was wondering about you. Glad to hear that you're fine.
We had a small quake a few years ago which absolutely terrified Tess, so good to hear that Sydney wasn't freaked out for too long.
Sheri: Sherishutterbug93 on October 17th, 2006 06:56 am (UTC)
Hi Carrie! I've missed you around here!! Thanks so much for your comment! We're fine out here - just a lost weekend without electricity - but thankfully our family and friends are all doing fine. :) *HUGS*

I heard about the earthquake in the news today (Monday) morning in the car and was very worried about you. I saw your post at work and, while I've not had time to write something, it made my day to hear from you - I'm very happy that you all are okay!

Take care and big *hugs* to you, Sheri!

Thanks so much for your comment, Sabine!! Thankfully our family and friends are all safe and all the quake really caused us was some mess and a Sunday with no electricity. Thanks so much for your comment!

Big *HUGS* to you!!
