Scary car woes...
...ridiculous things have been happening to me lately that I can't explain... As I was driving back from the Wahiawa Branch this morning, down the big hill by Kipapa gulch, my car totally shut down! And by this I mean, the brakes locked up (I have anti-lock brakes and I couldn't press it - it was frozen in the non-brake position!) and everything seemed to shut down, even my power steering didn't work!!

Which was SCARY for me, being that I was going down a HUGE hill at a very fast speed! I tried down shifting, but that didn't work... I ended up having to use my hand-brake to slow the car - which was terrifying because I was going SO fast from the momentum of the hill in relation to the other cars in front of me who had working steering wheels and brakes... :P

I almost didn't slow down fast enough for the car in front of me, and I had to change lanes to avoid rear ending him. :P I finally rolled down the hill at a manageable speed and was able to get my car off to the side... Where I sat - stuck on the freeway. :P I called Mark to ask him what I should do and told him I needed a tow... and tried to figure out WHY the hell I didn't sign up for that AAA membership when I had the chance.

While Mark was in a panic trying to figure out what to do next, I decided to try to start my car again... and miracle of miracles... it started. So I told him that I was going to try to drive it to the Sears by my office and take it in. Weird. For a car that absolutely could not accelerate, BRAKE, or change gears - it seemed to be working fine after that, but I didn't want to take any chances.

Told the guys over at Sears my strange story, they looked at my car and determined it was a problem with my battery - they even said that my alternator wasn't the problem (which was my guess). So a few hundred dollars later, I have a new battery, but I'm still pretty uncertain why this all occurred in the first place.

Really, when I was careening down that hill at a fast speed and realized I COULDN'T brake, my first thought was, "Oh my gosh, I'm going to crash this car and die!" Then when the hand-brake started to work (but not fast enough) my thoughts reverted to, "Oh my gosh, I'm going to hit this car in front of me and Mark's going to kill me!" :P I guess both thoughts had the same end result, but one was definitely more terrifying than the other...

Thankfully I didn't crash the car, or hit the car in front of me, I'm no longer stuck on the side of the freeway, I have a new battery, and I was even able to make it to my 4pm seminar in town. :P So, all things considered - it was a pretty LUCKY day for me - it could've been so much worse!!

Please forgive me if I can't get to your entries tonight... after the whole ordeal, I'm exhausted! Will promise to return all emails, PMs, LJ and Facebook comments tomorrow!!

I am so glad you're OK! That sounds seriously scary. My co-teacher was in a car accident yesterday, so maybe it was just a bad car karma day.

Sounds like you did all the right things, and I hope the new battery solves the problem. Take care, take deep breaths, and I hope today is a less freaky day.

Thanks so much for your comment! And wow... sorry to hear about your co-worker - it really must've been a bad car karma day! :(

Hopefully the battery was the problem... I drove my car today and it seemed fine, so I'm hopeful that the problems are behind me.

I was really panicking! It's a good thing that the hand-brake worked... I didn't want to have to explain to everyone that I rear ended another car WHILE we were both in motion driving on the freeway... How weird is that?

that happened to me too once... but luckily we were parked at a stop light! I was also a new driver then... it creeped me out. My uncle mentioned casually then that it seems we don't take the car out too much. I wondered what he was talking out.

I learnt that the battery often doesn't get a nice charge up in our city driving. We use AC, radio and other gadgets that use the battery but never drive fast enough for a constant time (suggested is 55-60mi/hr for half hour or so). I believe 55 is the speed limit in Hawaii, still? Once in a while go on a cruise... that did the trick for us.

That happened to you too? Oh my gosh! Thank goodness you were stopped at a light! It was pretty freaky,... especially after my work friend told me that there were obake stories about strange things happening on Kipapa gulch... :P I don't usually put much stock in stuff like that, but my car shutting down like that for no reason was really weird!!

Wow! That's very scary and I am so glad that you and your car are all OK. Does your car have an alarm with a kill switch? Joe's car did something similar and he had a new battery. Determined that it had something to do with the kill switch on the alarm. He is going to try to disable it.

But yeah, so glad you are unharmed!!

Not sure about the alarm and the kill switch... I'll have to ask Mark about that - that could explain why the car shut down so completely and so quickly! :P Thanks for your comment!!

Joe's car did it again tonight when we were out... he had to turn the alarm on and then off and then he could start the car again. So bizarre.

So glad that you are ok!
You need a new car. Even if it was just the battery. YIKES.

I'm so glad to hear you are okay now! That is a scary story, so did you sign up for AAA? I hope so!
Sheri: Sheri - yahoo iconshutterbug93 on May 7th, 2009 07:03 am (UTC)
You know, I still didn't sign up for AAA... I got an offer in the mail and it had a 10 day expiration on it. I told Mark we should sign up - if nothing else, we could get hotel discounts. Then a few days later, this happens,... What a coincidence! I should've just signed up! :P
