Seen in a recent Backstage West article...
"I went out for a McDonald's commercial and I was asked by the casting director to eat a Big Mac the way a Chinese person would..." - Tim Dang, producing artistic director for East West Players.

Well, shoot... I don't know whether to laugh or be offended. :P

Okay that is very strange. It can come off as funny or offensive. I am not sure which I'd chose either.

It was in an article about the lack of Asian Americans in Hollywood and the struggle Asian actors face in the entertainment industry.

You know that is so true about the lack of Asian Americans in Hollywood. It's sad really.

It's probably all in the delivery. I'll remain hopeful that he was being funny... ;-)

I'm hopeful he was trying to be funny too, because if he wasn't, his ignorance is frightening! :P

That is offensive- what is he supposed to do.. eat it with chopsticks?

Which kind of reminds me... Have you seen this site? I posted it in my journal a while back.

I found it offensive too. :P and it's so funny that you should say that, because here's the rest of his quote:

"And I said, 'What do you mean, like, with a chopstick?' I don't know that the casting director was even aware of what he said, but it was like, 'Do you know how funny that sounds?' Like we have different ways of eating other than through our mouths."

And I do remember the link to that site from your journal. :P

How... odd. I don't know whether or laugh or be offended either. I am leaning more toward being offended though. I mean... Huh??? I have witnessed a Chinese guy (Joe)eating a big mac on many occasions. Pretty much the same way everyone else does. ;P

Me too... I laughed at the comment initially, then thought, "Hmmm...that's pretty offensive!"

I liked Tim's response though:

"And I said, 'What do you mean, like, with a chopstick?' I don't know that the casting director was even aware of what he said, but it was like, 'Do you know how funny that sounds?' Like we have different ways of eating other than through our mouths."

Haha! Still pretty sad about the ignorance of that casting director, though. :P

Yeah, that comment about the chopsticks was great!

How does one eat a big mac with "a" chopstick? I mean, isn't it so heavy it'd just fall off if you speared it?

Haha! :D I think he meant "with chopsticks," but it's still ridiculous nonetheless. :)
