Bark! and The Wild Party

What a wonderful, fabulous day in theatre! I saw two COMPLETELY different shows today - both great in their own ways and I was fortunate enough to get the chance to see two of my favorites give outstanding performances. :)

Bark! at The Coast Playhouse

This afternoon I went to see Kristi Holden in Bark! the Musical. I'd really been looking forward to seeing her in the show (especially because I was so sad that I couldn't make it to see her in No, No Nanette because of the Ovation Awards.) :( The show itself was just so cute! :) Although a lot of the humor was adult, the show was very child friendly (even down to the length - it was 90 minutes WITH the 15 minute intermission). And there were a lot of children in the audience today who were younger than ten. The ensemble was extremely talented, especially Kristi, who played a poodle named Chanel. :) I'd seen Kristi before as Julie Jordan in "Carousel" at Thousand Oaks and I remember her having one of the most glorious sopranos that I've ever heard. This performance was no exception - and I know I may be biased, but she was the best part of the whole show. :)

After the show I hung around to say "Hi" to her. I have to admit that I was a little nervous, especially since I hardly ever go to the stage door for people other than Kevin and I am a bit shy (hey, no laughing!!) ;) with people I've never met before. And after all this time of seeing Kristi in shows, this was the first time I was actually meeting her. But I soon realized there was no reason to be nervous - she was SUCH a sweetheart!!! She gave me a HUGE hug and thanked me for coming to the show. :) We spent some time talking and she even introduced me to Brandon Alameda (who I swear I've seen in some other shows - outside of the Harold Arlen concert, but I can't place it right now.) I'm so glad that I got the chance to finally meet her and see her show... I really hope I'll be able to see her in something else on my next trip. :)

The Wild Party at The Blank Theatre

On the completely OTHER end of the spectrum was The Wild Party. It was a dark and disturbing musical - a complete 360 from what I saw this afternoon. I enjoyed it - in a much different way... Eric Anderson was dark and comic as Burrs (and as many people have said, a bit over the top at times) and Valarie Pettiford was truly amazing as Queenie. But the real reason I was even at the show was to see Julie Dixon Jackson and she was a GREAT Mae and she looked WONDERFUL. :)

The show was a little over two hours long (with NO intermission). It seems like the trend nowadays is to forego the intermission (The Drowsy Chaperone and Open Window didn't have intermissions either). It's a difficult thing, though especially if there are people in the audience who need to use the restroom... This evening someone in the audience got up and walked out to the restroom in the middle of one of Eric's scenes - he chased her up the stairs yelling, "Don't leave!" It was hysterical because it was so in character. :)

I stayed around after the show to talk with Julie. She was so surprised to see me there! (I forgot to email to tell her I wasn't coming on the 13th and I'd be there tonight instead. Oooops!) She and I spent some time talking about everything from her family (she showed me the MOST adorable picture of Lily and Beckett!) to the show, to just how hot and stuffy it was in the theatre tonight (I thought I was going to pass out). She introduced me to Kirsten Benton-Chandler and Valarie Pettiford and we spent some time talking with them. :) Then we jay-walked across the street (Julie and Linda are such bad influences on me! ;) - Julie tonight and Linda last night) ;) to our cars and spent more time talking out there. :) It was SO nice to catch up with Julie because I really haven't seen her in over a year, I've really missed her! Hopefully I'll be able to see her in something else in January too! :)

As a sidenote, the one thing I noticed about theatres in Hollywood - which both the Coast Playhouse and The Blank Theatre, as well as NoHo Arts Center, etc. have in common is their audience is VERY trendy and VERY knowledgable about theatre. In fact, in tonight's audience, I saw Sam Behrens of "General Hospital" and his wife Shari Belafonte sitting right behind me. They were both so cute with each other and so nice too. :)

I'm EXTREMELY exhausted! And for some reason, writing this post took me much longer than I thought it would. I'd better get to sleep. Tomorrow I have a long drive down to Long Beach for a matinee of "King and I." Hope you all have a nice evening. :)

Julie Ann - B&W icon

Julie Ann was in "Snow Wonder" tonight. :)

Oh my gosh! What luck that I changed the station when I did! Julie Ann's Christmas special - "Snow Wonder" is on CBS right now! :D It's a shame that I didn't know earlier and I'm not home to tape it! :( This is what she was filming in Louisiana back in July when I saw Kevin in "Guys & Dolls." :) Did anyone happen to catch it on TV tonight?

On a completely different note, today I was debating whether or not to see "King & I" at Musical Theatre West. I had tickets, but I've been so sleep deprived recently that I thought I might opt to just skip it and hibernate until my early flight tomorrow morning... But, I ended up going and I'm actually very glad that I did. :) MTW always puts on slick, professional musicals with nice sets and great casts - and this was no exception. Daniel Guzman (who I'd seen before in "Most Happy Fella") was great as the King - he was funny, commanding, and VERY appealing. I'm ashamed to say that I've never seen this musical before and I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it.

While I was waiting for the show to begin, I found out that Bets is going to be in a Christmas concert with MTW on (of all days) December 9th. It's THE SAME night as Kevin's concert at the Norris Center. :( Sadly, I won't be able to make it to either of them. :(

I can't believe that I'm finally going home tomorrow! :) It feels like SUCH a long time since I've been home, I really love to travel, but this trip was a little too long... I haven't seen Mark or Sydney for 10 days. :( Hopefully I'll be able to survive the flights home (please think good thoughts for me that no flights were overbooked by 21 people like on the way over!) :[

I'm off to watch "Snow Wonder." Hope you all have a nice evening. :)
