The Marvelous Wonderettes

Another wonderful day in LA! (Wonderettes & The Beastly Bombing)

Mark & I had more of a relaxing day yesterday... only leaving the hotel briefly for a little shoe and electronic shopping nearby. Then it was off to the El Portal Theatre to stop by Ronn's parking lot sale / fundraiser for the Valley Musical Theatre. :) I got to pick up a couple of things while I was there - a "Joan of Arcadia" Pilot script and a "West Wing" emmy consideration DVD and I got to see and say HI to Ronn so it ended up being a very nice afternoon. :)

The Marvelous Wonderettes

As always, the show was spectacular!! Bets was sweet enough to reserve us great seats on the left side of the house. It was really wonderful to see the show from the opposite side of the theatre because I got to see the show from a whole new perspective... Kirsten said I sat on the "Cindy Lou" side and for the first time I got to really see what a great character actress she is. :) Bets and Julie were outstanding - as always, and I felt that Bets sounded extraordinarily strong that day - her "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" was the strongest that I've ever heard it - she was incredible!! And I'm SOOO glad that I got to see Kim before she left for Texas - her voice is truly amazing!!

After the show I got to speak with the cast for a while and I simply adore them... they're all such lovely, lovely people! I don't think there's ever (with the sole exception of Side Show) been a cast of people who I completely adored the way I do the wonderettes. They're all such a joy to speak with. While speaking with Bets and Kim, I found out that I'm waaaay behind in my Wonderette viewing - at just three performances, I think I'm going to need to catch up! ;) Bets is looking SOOOO thin now - almost as though she's going to disappear. I almost felt bad giving her the chocolate dipped shortbread cookies from Big Island Candies I'd brought for her... It was such a wonderful afternoon and I'm SOOO glad that I got to see the original cast one last time before Kim leaves for Texas.

The Beastly Bombing

That evening, Mark & I went to see Heather in The Beastly Bombing at the Steve Allen Theatre. The theatre itself was really interesting to see - it's housed within the Center for Inquiry West. I found it fascinating to just walk around and look at the art and read the articles on the walls... It's a center that explores freethinking and the freedom of inquiry. Which would seem fitting that a show like The Beastly Bombing would be shown there.

Certainly not politically correct (and that was the whole aim of the show) the mini operetta deals with a couple of terrorists from Saudi Arabia and two white supremacists who want to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge. Not sound like a show that I might initially chose to see? Well, honestly, if Heather was not in the cast, I don't know that we would have. But thankfully we did because it was surprisingly funny in its un-PC humor and quite intelligently written in its satire. Definitely not for those who offend easily... as it offends almost every ethnicity.

Saw Heather afterward and she kept asking if I liked the show - I think she was worried that I'd be offended by it... which for those who know me, I don't offend easily. It was SOOO nice to see her, though and I realized it was exactly a year since I'd first met her at the Write Act when she and Kevin did It Came From Beyond together. We talked quite a bit and found out she was filming another movie soon and we eventually got into a conversation of how long Mark & I have been together and when we were having children. :) I have to say, I just love Heather. :) At first glance, just by looking at her (I mean, she looks like a model) she seems like she might be a little stand-offish, but really she's just the sweetest, SWEETEST person. I'm really glad we got to see her in the show!!

Today is our three show day! We see Altar Boyz at the Wadsworth at 1pm, then we're heading to the Victory Theatre to see Kimberly Akimbo at 4pm, and then heading to the Colony to see Stage Struck at 7pm. Should be another great day of theatre!! Hope you're all having a nice weekend!! Big *HUGS*
