Our last show day in LA - three shows!! :)

Yesterday was an extraordinarily busy day of theatre for us - since we rarely have the opportunity to see things back home, Mark & I wanted to cram as much theatre as we could into the days we were here - so that included a Sunday filled with Altar Boyz, Kimberly Akimbo, and Stage Struck. :)

Altar Boyz

I'd been looking forward to this show for a long time, in part because of all the wonderful things I'd heard from others about it - and really, it turned out to be a delightfully fun and amusing show. :) For those who haven't heard about it, it's about a group of young men who go "on tour" to try to save souls through their music. The show itself is filled with great music, slick choreography, hysterical lyrics, and some really cute, funny moments.

The tour cast was great - most notably Ryan Ratliff - who plays the diminutive Mark - he was simply hysterical in the role. :) It was really a lot of fun and Mark & I are so glad that we got the chance to see it! As a side note, I'll be seeing the Regional version of the show at Musical Theatre West on my next trip to LA in April. :)

Kimberly Akimbo

What can I say, David Lindsay-Abaire is a genius! I've loved his work ever since seeing Fuddy Meers at the Colony about 5 years ago and I've ALWAYS wanted to see this show. It's about Kimberly - who is a 16 year old who suffers from Progeria, a disease which causes her to age rapidly and at 16, more resembles a 60 year old.

The play is about Kimberly and her off-beat, sometimes juvenile parents, a convict aunt, and a boy named Jeff from her biology class at school who becomes her "boyfriend." Casting a real 60 year old in the role of Kimberly is the element that gives the play an interesting twist... Judy Jean Burns is a GREAT Kimberly, but I felt that, at times, in her need to appear young, a couple of her mannerisms might have appeared just a little overdone. I loved Patrick Rogers, though who played her 16 year old boyfriend Jeff. He played the meek, somewhat nerdy character beautifully and really brought a lot of humor and sensitivity to the role. Really, the entire cast was wonderful and it was really a great production - I'm really glad that I finally got the chance to see this show staged!!

Stage Struck

This was a murder/suspense show - which was staged in a really unique way. Between scenes, it was part of the show to view the set being dressed, the actors changing costumes, and putting on make up, etc. It was if it was to emphasize the fact that the audience was watching a show - and that the actions of the characters were being "staged" (not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of the other characters as well...)

I'm not one for suspense shows in theatre... so although the show was interesting and the cast was great (most notably Larry Cedar - who I'd seen before and loved in 1776 with Kevin way back in 2001) it really wasn't my kind of show... I do admit that the "show within a show" aspect of it all was an interesting touch and the plot twists were interesting, but all in all it wasn't really a show that I'd really choose to see again.

When all the shows were done, Mark & I were literally starving!! Running from theatre to theatre all day left us no time to grab any food in between!! So I stopped over at In & Out Burger so Mark could fulfill his burger craving and we stopped by Ralphs on the way back to the hotel so I could pick up a veggie pizza - I don't think I've ever eaten anything so fast in all my life... :)

Today we head home... which is rather depressing for me. :( I've come to realize that more than anything, these LA trips have become somewhat of a vice - which allows me to remain sane through all my work stress... Really, just knowing I have another trip on the horizon is enough to get me through some pretty bad days at work. Some people drink, some smoke, I head to LA for great theatre... go figure. :P

I wanted to thank you all for putting up with all of my rambling trip entries. :) Mark & I are heading out to Trader Joe's for some last minute omiyage (travel gift) shopping for our office people and family and then we're heading home to the fuzzy dog (who we miss so much!!) Hope you all have a nice Monday and to those of you who are off, have a nice holiday!! Big *HUGS*
