...ridiculous things have been happening to me lately that I can't explain... As I was driving back from the Wahiawa Branch this morning, down the big hill by Kipapa gulch, my car totally shut down! And by this I mean, the brakes locked up (I have anti-lock brakes and I couldn't press it - it was frozen in the non-brake position!) and everything seemed to shut down, even my power steering didn't work!!
Which was SCARY for me, being that I was going down a HUGE hill at a very fast speed! I tried down shifting, but that didn't work... I ended up having to use my hand-brake to slow the car - which was terrifying because I was going SO fast from the momentum of the hill in relation to the other cars in front of me who had working steering wheels and brakes... :P
I almost didn't slow down fast enough for the car in front of me, and I had to change lanes to avoid rear ending him. :P I finally rolled down the hill at a manageable speed and was able to get my car off to the side... Where I sat - stuck on the freeway. :P I called Mark to ask him what I should do and told him I needed a tow... and tried to figure out WHY the hell I didn't sign up for that AAA membership when I had the chance.
While Mark was in a panic trying to figure out what to do next, I decided to try to start my car again... and miracle of miracles... it started. So I told him that I was going to try to drive it to the Sears by my office and take it in. Weird. For a car that absolutely could not accelerate, BRAKE, or change gears - it seemed to be working fine after that, but I didn't want to take any chances.
Told the guys over at Sears my strange story, they looked at my car and determined it was a problem with my battery - they even said that my alternator wasn't the problem (which was my guess). So a few hundred dollars later, I have a new battery, but I'm still pretty uncertain why this all occurred in the first place.
Really, when I was careening down that hill at a fast speed and realized I COULDN'T brake, my first thought was, "Oh my gosh, I'm going to crash this car and die!" Then when the hand-brake started to work (but not fast enough) my thoughts reverted to, "Oh my gosh, I'm going to hit this car in front of me and Mark's going to kill me!" :P I guess both thoughts had the same end result, but one was definitely more terrifying than the other...
Thankfully I didn't crash the car, or hit the car in front of me, I'm no longer stuck on the side of the freeway, I have a new battery, and I was even able to make it to my 4pm seminar in town. :P So, all things considered - it was a pretty LUCKY day for me - it could've been so much worse!!
Please forgive me if I can't get to your entries tonight... after the whole ordeal, I'm exhausted! Will promise to return all emails, PMs, LJ and Facebook comments tomorrow!!
