Memphis 2

HOCKADOO! Memphis is wonderful!

I've been waiting MONTHS to see this show! I don't think I could forgive myself for missing this show when it played at La Jolla Playhouse a while back... I was SO looking forward to this show going to Broadway. I was THRILLED when I found out it would be previewing the week I arrived - and what's more, it starred Chad Kimball, a favorite performer of mine from about 8 years ago (saw him in "Little Fish," "Into the Woods," etc.)

What I love about the show is that it's so heartfelt. It's basically a love story about a Memphis DJ and a beautiful young singer... of course, they're star-crossed (I wouldn't have my love story any other way!) Chad Kimball plays Huey Calhoun, the DJ that brought R&B music to the mainstream. Chad is WONDERFUL in the show... he has a gorgeous voice, but it's his heartbreaking acting that gets to me. I am SUCH a fan of body language and expressions and Chad is the master of heartbreaking / longing expressions. The way he looks at Montego Glover is just heartbreaking! And Montego Glover is absolutely radiant! Just beautiful and her singing is AMAZING! Together, they have so much chemistry - it radiates throughout the entire theatre.

Not going to mention too much about the show itself, since it's still in previews and not set, but I loved it... Really, I already think that it's one of the best shows on Broadway (and definitely my favorite playing right now!)

Got up the courage to stay after the show on Sunday (which I usually don't do...) I've seen Chad in so many things, but have never actually stayed to meet him. He was the warmest, sweetest man there is! He was incredibly sweet and humble and when I told him how many times I was coming to the show he did the Kevin Earley thing (when I first met him at 1776!) and said, "Don't spend too much of your money on the show, now." :) He reminds me so much of Kevin, it's unbelievable! But he stayed there patiently speaking with all the people who stayed to see him and was the very last one out of there... He stayed and made SURE that everyone who wanted signatures and pictures got them... he's BEYOND sweet and I absolutely adore him!

Montego Glover was a darling as well! In my previous post about the Flea Market, I mentioned that she promised me a photo with her at the photo booth.... but she never got called for the photo booth. :( When I saw her at the stage door she said, "Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry we lost each other this morning!! I had someone look for you - I told them you were a petite Asian girl, but they couldn't find you and I had to leave! Now we can have our picture!" :) She was SOOOO sweet! And on stage... off stage... she is absolutely beautiful! Breathtakingly beautiful!

Derrick Baskin was a sweetheart and when I mentioned to him that I took my first picture with him when he was in "Spelling Bee" he said, "WOW! That was a LONG time ago!!" He was SO sweet!! I loved him in the show and he was ABSOLUTELY adorable at the stage door!

Charlie Williams, who is a good friend of my friend Steven's was also the sweetest person!! He was ADORABLE and seemed so touched when I told him that Steven had mentioned him to me. He was SO adorable and so great in the show! :)

What a special, special cast this is and what a special show it is!! Please go and see it,... it's honestly one of the best shows on Broadway right now... LOVED it SOOO much!!
