I got my first phone call today EVER from a collector... :P Apparently they said my credit card was two months deliquent and they were going to put it on my credit report. I was in shock!! :O I had absolutely NO IDEA what they were talking about because I'm a fanatic about paying bills on time... I mean, I take bill payment VERY seriously!! I asked him what card it was and he said it was my Ann Taylor credit card.

Then I remembered... I applied for and received an Ann Taylor line of credit a couple of months ago and put my first purchase on it - but had NEVER received a bill or even the card itself! I'd nearly forgotten all about it! I told him I'd never received a bill and asked him what address they had for me on file. Can you believe they had only the numeric part of my address and NO STREET NAME? No wonder I never got my bills! He put me on hold and verified that they'd been getting return mail for me... What upsets me is - they got return mail for me and NEVER picked up the phone to call me to verify my address, yet they can pick up the phone to demand their money?? WTF?

I gave them my correct address, and they told me they'd change it on the system but that I had to pay $125 by today - which was much more than I had even charged on my account to begin with! :P When I asked WHY the large amount, the guy said that it included two $25 past due fees! :( I really don't think that I should have to pay the late fees... I mean, if I'd gotten a bill, I would've paid it! :[ Then he told me he needed my bank routing number and account number so they could debit my payment automatically... Shoot, I work with fraud cases every day and I didn't want to give them that information over the phone. So I told him that there was an Ann Taylor across the street from my office (which, thankfully, there is) and I would walk the payment in myself, but that I was only willing to pay what I owed - and not any of the late fees...

He told me that I had to pay the entire amount or my account wouldn't be "current" and that they would credit my account back the $50 after the payment was made... HUH?? For one thing, I didn't ever want to use that credit card again - and there was no way that I was going to let them hold $50 of my money on it for something I DIDN'T do! I was so upset that I decided to just go down to the store and explain it to a sales person to try to see if someone could help me there.

Thankfully, the sales person I went to was VERY nice when I explained everything to her and she called them back for me and got them to deduct the late fees and I ended up paying what I owed in the store. She also made sure that they were going to take the item off my credit report. :P Thank goodness it all ended alright, but that's the LAST time I ever apply for an in store credit card at the check out line - I've learned my lesson!! :[

Whoah, that sucks! You're right, that's a basketful of WTF. Glad it was much easier to fix in person. Yikes!

Thank goodness the people at the store were nice enough to help me straighten it out. I was nearly banging my head against the wall talking with that guy on the phone! :P

Woah what a nightmare!!!!! I hate pushy people like that - they want you to pay for THEIR mistake. I guess a lot of people do though - that is why they are like that.

Im glad you got it taken care of!

I'm SO glad that I got it taken care of!! I was getting SO frustrated with the guy on the phone and I was seriously getting NOWHERE with him. He was really getting on my last nerve!! :[

Yeah I am sure they are used to people just agreeing to pay it to avoid it going to collections - so Im really glad it was convenient for you to go in there and have them straighten it out... instead of just paying it.

And they can have some VERY manipulative people in those positions.

Credit cards are SO scary. :( I wish I never knew about them!

WTF is right!!! That is awful! I cannot believe that guy wanted the "late fees" you didn't even know you had. Actually, I can believe it. :( That's sad. I'm just glad you got it taken care of. *hugs*

That guy on the phone was just ridiculous! I was getting so upset because I was really getting NOWHERE talking with him. :P It's a good thing I was able to straighten it out at the store, though. Thanks for your comment, Carrie.

Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry that this has happened to you too! :( But, just like you I nearly forgot all about it because I never received anything in the mail! I'm glad that you got your situation straightened out too. I will NEVER get talked into applying for another line of credit at the cash register ever again - I don't care how much they tell me they'll take off my purchase! ;)

Well what a moron that guy is! Here let me charge you for a mistake my company made. LOL! Stupid! I'd be saying WTF all over the place about this. What person can sit there demanding money for a mistake made by them, and still feel like a logical person? That would make me so upset.

I was SO upset with that guy on the phone! I couldn't believe that he wanted me to pay the late fee when it was clear I never received anything (not even my card!) through the mail! And what person in their right mind would think that mail could get to its destination WITHOUT a street name? *SIGH* Thank goodness it all worked out!

I am glad you got it all fixed. I had a similar experience once and it was so frustrating to try to fix. :( It was like they assumed I was lying about not receiving the bills. Ugh.

Glad it's worked out. (You still might want to check the credit reporting agencies to make sure it's really NOT on your report.)

Oh, my... that's worst when you tell them you haven't received the bill and they acted as though they didn't believe you! I would've been SO mad if that happened! :[ Thankfully in this case, the guy actually acknowledged that they'd received my mail back.

I think I will check my credit report after a while to make sure nothing's on there from this incident. That's the last thing I would need - bad credit because of a silly mistake! :[ Thanks for suggesting it!!

He probably was just an ass, thinking it was his "job" to collect as much money as possible on his company's behalf, regardless of extenuating circumstances.

He was just ridiculous! I couldn't believe he acknowledged their mistake, but was still so adamant about me paying the late fees. :[

I wish I could. Sadly I have to have one for my work. I comfort myself by saying it's not really mine, but my companies. Ah well.

How infuriating! Oh, I'm so glad you got to go to the store and get it sorted out in person...the person you talked to on the phone sounds absolutely ridiculous! The whole situation wasn't your fault at all - there's no way you should have had to pay the extra money. That's just absurd. I'm sorry you had to deal with that annoyance today, Sheri! :( *hugs* Hope you have a good Friday! :D

He just wasn't making any sense at all! In fact, near the end I just wanted to end the conversation because it was going absolutely nowhere. :P Thank goodness the sales people at the store were nice and friendly and willing to help me resolve the issue. It's a good thing that Ann Taylor is just across the street from my office. I know the guy on the phone was legit, but I really hate giving out my account number over the phone!! Thankfully it all seems to have been straightened out.
