Seeing 13 again and eating at Sonic for the first time...
Yesterday we drove out to the Fullerton area in search of Sonic Drive Inn. Mark and I had always seen the commercials and had always wanted to go because the food looked so good on TV. We'd never actually been there before since there isn't one in Hawaii and it's usually out of our way when we're in LA. :P Sadly, we were a little disappointed... aside from the real fruit slushes (I had the strawberry one which was delicious), their other food was just average... I don't know, maybe we were eating the wrong things... There really wasn't a whole lot on the menu that I could eat anyway and though Mark enjoyed his burger, his fries were cold and stale and my tater tots w/cheese were just average at best... Those of you who have been to Sonic before - was our bad experience out of the ordinary?

We spent A LOT of time yesterday in traffic driving to the Burbank area... I swear, each time I visit LA the traffic seems to get worse and worse. It was so bad, in fact, that we were almost late for the 8pm showing of 13 at the Mark Taper Forum... :( Luckily we made it just in time even if we were literally running through the parking structure trying to make it into the theatre before the curtain. :P

Minutes before the show began, I noticed that sitting just in front us was Kathleen Marshall (who directed "Wonderful Town" and "Pajama Game" but is probably more known as being one of the three judges on the "Grease: You're the One That I Want" reality show...) We also saw Jason Robert Brown in the audience - who actually came up to speak with Ms. Marshall before the show began.

The show was just as wonderful as it was the first time we'd seen it. We are still SOOO amazed at the talent of the actors on stage (the entire cast and orchestra are between the ages of 12-16). The show is just so heartfelt and funny that it's almost impossible not to completely love it! I'm SO glad that we got the opportunity to see it a second time!!

Today we're stopping by Ronn's parking lot sale/fundraiser for Valley Musical Theatre in the afternoon (I want to support them as much as I possibly can!!) and then we're seeing the matinee of The Marvelous Wonderettes because no LA trip is complete without seeing those wonderettes!! :D Then later tonight we're heading to the Steve Allen Theatre to see Heather in The Beastly Bombing. It should be another fabulous day of great theatre! :) Hope you're all having a nice weekend!! Big *HUGS* to you!!

Nope... you didn't eat the wrong things. Sonic is not all that it's cracked up to be. Great slushies but the food? It's just typical fast food and not even *good* fast food. :) But now you have tried it.

We were really shocked - we thought the food looked incredible in the commercials! :( I do have to admit that the fruit slushes are pretty good - I had the strawberry and Mark had the lime. But, true, I feel no desire to ever go back there...

We have no plans to eat there ever either.

Oh, what sort of stuff are they selling, and when?

According to Ronn's email, it's things that friends of the theatre are donating - and it's running from 9am - 5pm on Saturday and Sunday the 17th & 18th. I'd love to support him and his theatre since they've been so kind to me. :)

It's better than most of the other chains-with the exception of an occasional cheeseburger (and by occasional I mean once every few months-I did eat a McDonalds cheeseburger yesterday so my quota is filled until August or September sometime). I don't do much fast food-when I do I usually prefer Sonic (Or Jack in the Box is pretty good too) but it's more because they have more choices than McDonald's or Burger King and not because of the quality. The slushes (and cream slushes) at Sonic are awesome though. You can get a grilled cheese there even though they don't have it on their menu. The chicken wraps they have are pretty good. They have quite a few salads and lighter items on the menu. That being said, fast food is fast food... you're not gonna get better unless you just don't eat fast food and cook your food yourself, in most cases. :) I don't really consider Red Robin and Fuddruckers to be true fast food since they make their stuff up fresh, their burgers are actually good. I've never gotten cold food from Sonic. I did have an experience where I watched as someone at the drive through was hocking loogeys out the window right in front of the people who were sitting there waiting for food to be delivered. I complained because that's just nasty (I told them not to send me anything, I just thought that was gross and people didn't need to see that while waiting for their food), and they sent me a coupon for a free meal. They usually pride themselves on fast hot food, but I don't think the quality is better than any other fast food, there are just more choices. :) If I want GOOD burgers I'll either hit Fudd's or make them myself! :)

Re: Sonic
Admittedly, I didn't eat the burger so I'm not too sure how they stack up that way. Mark said it was pretty tasty, but we were upset at the condition of the fries and tater tots. I think In & Out is still Mark's favorite burger place - at least for the time being... :) And I didn't know that I could've ordered a grilled cheese! I would've LOVED to have ordered that -- darn!! And I do agree, the fruit slushes are just incredible!! And that was very nice of them to give you the free meal coupon. :) Maybe the next time we're in the area we'll give it another chance. :) Thanks for your feedback, Laura!!

Re: Sonic
Yeah, I discovered the grilled cheese thing by accident, they have that section of the menu called "toaster sandwiches" so I asked if they could do a grilled cheese, and they did. :)

From Sonic... it's all about the drinks. I hear you about the fries, not sure about the tots. I liked the toaster sandwich I had last time. The coney dog is pretty good too from what I've heard.

I'm glad you are enjoying the theatre at least. HUGS!

I totally agree with you and would go back for the drinks... that strawberry slush I had was pretty good! And now that I found out that could just do a grilled cheese sandwich, I'm a little more optimistic. :)

The theatre here has been INCREDIBLE so far!! :)

Funny you should mention....but we're heading to Sonic today for lunch. I find their food to be fairly greasy in comparison to other places. Grease equals yum I think.

When I've eaten at the Sonic in Pueblo, CO it was delicious. Part of that may have been because I was on vacation. They opened a Sonic here not too long ago and the lines wrap around the block several times.....unless you know to hop out and do the walk up window. I hope it's good today and not too greasy.

You'll have to come to Oregon and try Burgerville. Now they have some good food. Expensive tho' as far as fast food goes.

Haha!! Best line of the day!! :D

I think possibly Mark & I will head back there one day just to give it another try... I thought it might just have been an off day for them and I really did like their strawberry slush. :) Mark is a HUGE burger fan - I'm sure he'd be SOOO into Burgerville!

I don't think we've Sonic Drive Inn here but listen to you it does not seem as if we would miss something.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the show and I hope you will have a wonderful time. :) Big *hugs* to you, Sheri!

I'm hoping that it was just an off day for them... The drinks were really good and maybe Mark & I will try it again one day.

We're having such a great time in LA, thanks so much Sabine!! Hope you're having a nice weekend as well!! :) Big *HUGS* to you!

Sonic is based about five miles from where I live. It's in every small town around here. A friend of mine once said that without Sonics the teenagers would have nowhere to turn around while "crusing".

Haha! We will probably give Sonic another try, especially now that I know that they make grilled cheese sandwiches - probably the only thing (besides the shakes and fries) that I can eat on the menu.
Kananigirlkananigirl on February 18th, 2007 12:34 am (UTC)
Gee, I was wondering about Sonics, since yeah we always see those commercials! The only thing I want over there is...slushes and drinks. HAHAH

It's sounds like you're having a blast in LA! Have a fun, safe trip!
Sheri: Sheri - yahoo iconshutterbug93 on February 18th, 2007 05:32 pm (UTC)
The slushes are really good! I got the strawberry one and Mark got the lime. :) I think I'd go back just to get another one!

And thanks! We're having such a nice time out here! :D

Aww, I'm sorry that food didn't live up to expectations! That's always disappointing! :( Sounds like a great trip so far though - I hope it continues to be! :D

The trip is going so wonderfully!! The theatre has just been incredible and any trip that I can see Bets (twice!), Kevin, Julie, and Heather is certainly well worth it!! :D

JRB's wife, Georgia Sitt was a vocal coach for Grease Academy. I think that's why Katheleen was there :)
