The character of Shy, I feel, is one of the most sympathetic roles throughout most of the first act and has the biggest opportunity for growth in the show - however I felt this wasn't taken advantage of... We never saw Shy change in any way throughout the show - except that at the end she seemed the most flippant about the closing of the "chicken ranch." I know that Julie Ann played this part back in Chicago and I would've been interested to see her interpretation of the role.
All in all it felt as though the production was missing something that I could never really place my finger on... There were some outstanding vocals in the show and Anita Hall was pretty great as Miss Mona, but sadly, some of the other parts felt as though there were many missed opportunities. We were glad that we were able to see it, but we'd like the opportunity to see the show staged again in a different venue.
Please don't get me wrong, I love Diamond Head Theatre - some of the productions we've seen there were EXTREMELY wonderful - in particular, the 2005 production of The Full Monty - which was SOOO well acted, directed, choreographed, etc. that it rivaled many productions I've seen in LA.
In other theatre news, Kevin performed last night at the Upright Cabaret for Jerry Sternbach's big birthday celebration. I wish I lived in the area - these are the things I would've loved to have gone to - had I had the opportunity. Next up for Kevin is his ALW concert in Long Beach for MTW - which I'd toyed with flying out to see... But after three years of seeing him in ALW Calphil concerts, I thought that my vacation would be better spent flying out for the Ovations. :) Hopefully there will be something he'll be in during that time that I can see him in as well. :)
On a non-theatre related note, Mark & I spent far too many hours challenging each other to scrabble through Facebook. Mark has been winning all the games recently - but I keep starting new ones with him. What can I say? I'm a glutton for punishment (my job should be proof of that!) ;)
Hope you're all having a nice weekend. I'm off to work on Ronn's site, and try my hardest to beat the hubby - though I don't see how I can when I have 4 "U's" and a "G" in my tray. :( I doubt that: UUGUU is a word in the English dictionary. ;)
