Couple of notes about my Saturday in LA...
ASL Storytime at Deaf West Theatre

Now a regular stop on my theatre travels - I went to Deaf West Theatre to see their ASL Storytime. Koda West (an organization for Kids of Deaf Adults - usually known as CODAs - Children of Deaf Adults) was there sponsoring the day and signed stories written by hearing children of deaf adults. Brian Campbell was interpreting again - and I have to say, he's one of the best! It was also such a pleasant surprise to see Deanne Bray and her daughter Kyra in the audience that day. :)

Winter Wonderettes!

Such a cute and delightful show!! It's so wonderful to see this version of the show because after seeing and loving the Marvelous Wonderettes, to find out what happened to all the characters 6 months after MW ends is just a lot of fun! :) Bets, Julie, and Misty were fabulous in their roles and the show was just as heartfelt, funny, and sweet as the original. :) I really enjoyed it - especially Missy's little tribute to Hawaii in their Christmas Around the World! :)

Later I got to spend some quality time with everyone and we spoke about Spam recipes ;), traffic to Costa Mesa, how everything closes in Kauai at 6pm... it was wonderful! I absolutely love Bets, Julie, and Misty and seeing them all together in the same show was really a dream come true!! And Jill was a pleasure to meet - and so hysterical as well - "Because you know, Hawaii is another country..." :)

Jersey Boys in Costa Mesa

Made it to Costa Mesa just in time to make the 7:30pm showing of "Jersey Boys" (thanks to Misty's traffic advice!)

Several things I noticed in this production vs. the Ahmanson run...
  • There were no trap doors in the floor - the mics for "Stay" etc. came onstage from the side.
  • This is the first time I'd seen Steve Gouveia as Nick - his Nick seemed a little more affable and (for lack of a better word) teddy-bearish than Michael's. Michael's Nick seemed maybe a bit more -- I don't know... refined and sophisticated (not the right choice of words, I know - I'm not too sure what I'm getting at here...)
  • Chris Jones has really improved SO MUCH in the role, not that he wasn't great before, but he has certainly grown as an actor and a singer since I'd seen him 5 months ago.
  • All the Jersey girls have been replaced.
  • Costa Mesa audiences DRESS UP for shows - I saw women in shiny evening gowns there - so unlike the Ahmanson where most people wore jeans! (It was closing night, but still...)
  • Sorry, but the sound system in the OCPAC really sucks! The guy next to me kept turning to his wife saying, "What did he say? I missed it!" Normally that would annoy me throughout the show, but at points I really couldn't blame him. The sound in the first act was so terrible! (It got a little better - or I got used to it - in the second act.)
  • Brandon Matthieus was out - so it was interesting to see Taylor Sternberg in all of his roles. :)

One last thing - maybe two...

Did anyone see Julie Ann in "A Picture of Hollis Woods" last night? I was flying back home when it aired so I dvd-ed it and plan to watch it this week. :)

I am IN LOVE with "October Road" - I watched all of Season 1 on the flight over to LA and cried like a baby - it's one of the best shows I've seen in a long time! It's the first time I've actually gotten addicted to a series that was still on the air - not to mention that it's been a long time since I've gotten addicted to a series on network tv! :D Has anyone seen it?

I'm off to catch up with all of your entries! Hope you've all had a nice weekend!! Big HUGS to you!!
