The holidays were a lot different this year with no fuzzy dog around, I have to say... It seemed odd to be eating breakfast at the in-laws and not have someone randomly squeal in surprise at a cold nose sniffing their hand under the table... ;) And of course, it also meant that Sydney was not around this year to do her annual Holiday Post. :(
But all in all it was a lovely time to spend with our families --- New Year's Eve will be spent with my Mom at our in-law's annual New Year's Eve party and then we head over to my Mom's house for New Year's Day. This year we've decided to do a little something different, instead of an elaborate dinner, we're having a Sugar Bowl pizza party that day (Since, EVERYONE in Hawaii - who didn't actually travel to New Orleans - will be tuned in to the UH game... and seeing as how we haven't been to a major bowl game in YEARS, this is HUGE for our little state!) :)
Hope you've all been well! I'm off to read all of your entries that I've missed!
But, before I go, I leave you with this, because it just isn't the end of the year if I didn't...
1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Began taking ASL classes through night school - very terrifying at first, but one of the best things I did all year.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I think my resolution was to maintain my vegetarian lifestyle and my weight. And for the first time in years, I didn't fluctuate in clothing sizes at all... I do need to work out more and that'll be a resolution for 2008.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes, as a matter of fact, SOOOO many of my friends gave birth this year, I can't even tell you! As well as a couple of my reps and a few LJ friends.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
5. What countries did you visit?
Didn't do any traveling abroad this year... though I did take a trip to Sacramento and 10 trips to LA this year to see great theatre and attend weddings of some dear friends.
6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Last year I said I wanted a better handle on my new postion - which, for the most part, I think I have. There's always learning and growing that needs to be done, but I feel more comfortable than I did this time last year. For next year, I'd like to be a little more adventurous in my interactions with the deaf community - I'm still a little shy about it all right now.
7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
August 23rd, the day that Sydney passed away... :( :(
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Just being able to make it through this awful year was achievement enough, I think :P
9. What was your biggest failure?
Probably not working out and getting as out of shape as I have... :P
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Thankfully, no, but sadly my loved ones did. :(
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Tickets to see "Sleeping Beauty Wakes" in May! At first, it was all about seeing a Kevin show - but slowly it became about so much more... Groovelily's beautiful music, Russell Harvard's amazing talent - and through Russell, I met Anthony - and honestly, if I didn't go to the show, my life would be completely different right now... So, I guess I have Kevin to thank. :)
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
It might sound silly, but Sydney... She was always so happy and enjoyed life so much - even when she was ill, and she made us realize how precious life is.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
A particular online acquaintance I keep referring to in locked posts...
14. Where did most of your money go?
Aside from the mortgage and bills, theatre tickets, theatre tickets, and did I mention? THEATRE TICKETS!
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Going to the International Sign Language Theatre Festival in October and finally getting to meet Anthony!! Also the Ovation nominations where SOOOO many talented people that I adore were nominated for their wonderful work. :)
16. What song will always remind you of 2007?
Probably "Waiting on the World to Change" for obvious reasons.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? I'd have to go with sadder by a touch because there's still a huge hole in my heart from when we lost Sydney. :(
thinner or fatter? About the same, and that's never happened before!
richer or poorer? I think I'm in a little better financial place than I was last year.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spending more time with Sydney - you can't get those moments back!! :(
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Agonizing and stressing over work...
20. How did you spend Christmas?
Went to the in-laws for breakfast, then to my Mom's house for "make-your-own-sushi" at night. We set up my Mom's iPod shuffle for her and she loved her "travel box o' fun" that we got her (which included dvds and cds for her upcoming long plane rides to NYC and Japan) :)
21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?
Each year, Mark & I take my Mom to my in-law's house for their annual New Year's Eve party.
22. Did you fall in love in 2007?
I fell in love back in 1996 and never fell out of it. :)
23. How many one-night stands?
I don't like answering this question every year... None!
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Well, I started off the year with a serious "Six Feet Under" obsession. Michael C. Hall and Matthew St. Patrick are incredible and they were my main reasons for watching the show... Then I got hooked on "due SOUTH" and the fan fic that went along with all that lovely sub-text of seasons 3 & 4. ;) And with Callum Keith Rennie in the show - really, need I say more? ;) Shortly after "due SOUTH", I got hooked on "Slings & Arrows" (thanks, Linda!) and then most recently, "October Road" (which is truly beautiful - especially episode 5 of season 1 - I cried my damn eyes out on the plane!)
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't think I will ever hate anyone, but "dislike" sure did play a HUGE factor in this year for me.
26. What was the best book you read?
"Train Go Sorry" - by Leah Hager Cohen - I'm not done with it, but it's a pretty good book about deaf culture.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I'd have to say Groovelily - not only because of "Sleeping Beauty Wakes", but Brendan and Valarie have to be two of the nicest people around!! Who else? Last year it was Zero 1, Michelle Duffy, and Alan Campbell. Let's see... I'd have to also say the "Jersey Boys" touring cast.
28. What did you want and get?
Many great new website clients!! :)
29. What did you want and not get?
Sydney to get better, but well...
30. What was your favorite film this year?
I'm not really a movie person, in fact the only movies I tend to really like are VERY low-budget indie films (like "It's My Party" and "Lightning Bug.") However, this year I fell in love with the movie "Family Stone." Yes, it's a major release, but it started off as an indie film. It just really had the heart and feel of a good non-studio backed indie picture. :)
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Mark took me to eat dinner at P.F. Chang's, my co-workers surprised me with a lunch from CPK, and got me veggie soup from Down to Earth - a great birthday all around. :)
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
See above answer... # 29.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Because of my job, I have to wear a lot of suits (blazers and slacks) - this year I've been getting more and more into wearing fitted buttoned down shirts and slacks to work - less of the sweater and slacks of the previous year...
34. What kept you sane?
Definitely my hubby and of course, traveling to LA to see wonderful theatre has certainly kept me sane throughout the year as well.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
This was a different sort of year for me and my usual answer (to which everyone could already guess...) does not apply this year. Somehow, somewhere along the line we managed to grow apart this year - and for the first time in a LONG time, I'm not sad that most of my theatre traveling had nothing to do with him. In the "fancy" department, this year was all about Michael C. Hall, Callum Keith Rennie, and as the year progressed, Russell Harvard and Anthony Natale...
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Like the previous 2 years, I'll say - I haven't been keeping up with specific political issues because honestly in this administration, I may go nuts if I do.
37. Whom did you miss?
My Dad and Sydney. :(
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Sooo many people, both in the theatre community and out of it - I've been incredibly blessed this year to have met so many wonderful people!! But if I had to name names it would have to be Russell, Anthony, the two Patricks, and the incredibly warm and lovely Malone and Glaudini families!
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
Make every moment with those you love count - life is too short and precious!
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"..to being an us for once, instead of a them" - from "Rent", obviously. ;)
Here are my answers for 2003, 2004, and 2005, and finally 2006.
