Traffic, this darn bus strike, and "Assassins"...
This morning I started out for work much earlier than usual to take into account the fact that 1) the University was back in session AND 2) all the buses in the city didn't run today due to the start of a HUGE bus worker's strike. :P I've always had sympathy for labor groups who felt they were being treated unfairly and I'm all for rooting for the underdog, but today the people I felt extremely sorry for were the hundreds of senior citizens (who I see everyday at the bank) who depend on the bus system in our city to do the important things like buy food or go to the doctor. :( Don't get me wrong, I see both sides of this unpleasant issue and I really want what's best for everyone involved, but to me, the people who are really suffering from this strike are the elderly in our community - and that's just so unfortunate...

On the lighter - yet still pretty annoying side to all of this, it took me about two hours to get to work today. :P The traffic was so bad that I couldn't even make a left turn out of the back street of my house because cars were backed up past our house, past our subdivision, and even past several stop lights. :P It took me nearly an hour to even make it to the freeway :P It's a good thing I started early - hopefully the traffic will be better tomorrow.

And although I could've used tonight to catch up on some much needed sleep, I ended up spending most of the evening planning out the next trip to LA. I can't tell you how excited I am that Mark actually wants to go! :) I already reserved the hotel, bought the "Assassins" tickets, so the only thing left is to try priceline again next week for a rental car (they didn't like my offer of $15 a day...Hrmph!) AND yes, this time I do have plane tickets. ;)

I'm actually getting very excited about the trip (even though I still haven't fully recovered from this one...) - I LOVE "Assassins" (it's got to be one of my favorite shows) and I always thought that Kevin would be a spectacular John Wilkes Booth - and I found out at the concert that he IS playing Booth - how perfect is that?? :)

Do you always have much traffic around your house or is it usually quiet?
Sherishutterbug93 on August 27th, 2003 09:01 am (UTC)
It's surprising, but even if I live all the way out here in the "country" part of our island, we always have WAY too much traffic. :P My commute in to work is only about 24 miles or so, but it usually takes me about an hour and a half to get to work when school is in session. Do you have a lot of traffic where you live?
Claudelleclaudelle on August 27th, 2003 09:17 am (UTC)
I live in a small town (not much traffic) and my street is no a major route, so only those living there drive there. It is very quiete.
On the road to the station there is not much traffic, no traffic jam or such.
In Freiburg, where I work, is a lot of traffic and traffic jams as well, that is why I go to work by train.

Traffic is the pits. It's still pretty bad here and we are in the second week. So good luck to you. That's so sad about the elderly not having means of transportation. I mean I feel for the bus drivers, but when it comes to leaving people stranded, that's not fair. I hope the strike ends soon. I used to take the bus so I know how important it is to some people. *hugs* Take care and try to enjoy the rest of your week w/the traffic and all. :)

This is what I like about you, Carrie. :) You're always thinking about other people. :) I hope the strike ends soon too - I haven't seen some of my regular clients because they can't make it into the bank with the bus. :( And the news said that the next time strike talks will resume is September 24th - that's a little ridiculous for everyone who depends on the bus, don't you think? :( Hope the rest of your week goes well too. :) *HUGS* back!

Sept. 24th, that's awful. :( I just hope whoever needs the bus can get around some other way.

Wow, am I ever glad to live a half mile from work after reading your post!

You are so lucky! :) I think Mark & I should've given more thought to the awful commute when we purchased our home 6 years ago (the traffic has gotten progressively worse since we moved here though) - unfortunately it doesn't look like it'll be getting better - at least not any time soon. :(

Re: How exciting =)
I've always thought Kevin would make a great Booth. And since "Assassins" is one of my all time favorite shows - and I love the people at "Reprise!" it was just perfect - I just had to go.

BTW, did I tell you that I saw Aaron in his debut as Ted/Bob in "Sneaux!" last weekend? Are you going to see the show?

Edited to correct a spelling error - Sorry!

Aaron
You saw Aaron? Cool...Yeah I'm hopefully going either this or next weekend...What did you think?...And isn't his character "Larry"? =D
Sherishutterbug93 on August 28th, 2003 11:15 am (UTC)
Re: Aaron
Ooops, yup, Larry - that's it. :) I'm wasn't too sure of his character's name since I can't find my playbill. It wasn't really my type of humor - unfortunately. There were some really talented people in the cast though... Kristin Bell (?) was fabulous as Sneaux/Amy and a few other performers really stood out. I'm glad I got to see it, but I didn't really care for it, hopefully you'll enjoy it more than I did.

Re: Aaron
i'm not sure it'll be my kind of humor either but i wanna see aaron...yeah kristen bell is supposed to be awesome! so how long were u in LA? you should just move out here considering how often u come out to see kev, etc =)

Re: Aaron
Yeah, Aaron was funny in the role. I was in LA only 2 (full) days - to see Kevin's concert, and a few shows in the area. And I'll be back for "Assassins" - I couldn't pass up that great cast... Plus it's been so long since I've seen Kevin ACT - concerts are great, but half of his appeal is his great acting talent.

Have fun at "Sneaux!" - there are good points to the show - and some parts that are kind of funny. Would love to hear what you thought of it...

I'm sorry to hear that you needed so much time to reach your work. I hope it will be better soon. You are right, actually they should think of the people who are depend on the bus - esp. if they plan to strike for a longer while. The last time when the bus drivers in my town struck they did it during the times when people had to reach/came back from their work. But they worked during the other times so that there was the possibility to use a bus (not so regular as usual) if you really needed it.

Wish you a nice rest of the week. :)
Sherishutterbug93 on August 28th, 2003 08:36 am (UTC)
Hopefully the strike talks will resume before September 24th. The last time we had a bus strike here it lasted for two months - so we'll have to see. :(

Hope you have a nice rest of your week too! *HUGS*
