A long, but wonderful weekend in the city...
I just got off the plane a few hours ago and I've been skimming your entries - boy did a lot happen this weekend for all of you! I will catch up on all of the entries I missed in a bit, but I wanted to write about our Valentine's weekend trip to NYC first. :)

Meeting and seeing online friends

I was finally able to put some faces with some LJ names this weekend. On Sunday, Mark & I had lunch with mslauren2930 and her sister. :) We had a great time talking about theatre, movies, and other random things like the pointlessness of daylight savings time. :) I also got to spend some time with Sarah, an old friend of mine from my Chad Brannon days. She and I were both at "Wicked" on Friday night. I also got to see broadway_rose, bwaystrkiki128, starstruck113, and crissyj at many, many shows that weekend. ;)

"Millie" - Sutton's last performance and Kevin

Saw Sutton's last performance as Millie and it was spectacular! She received such loud entrance applause both when the curtain rose and when she turned to face the audience. It looked like she got a little teary during the first few lines of "Not For The Life of Me", but then pulled it together and seemed to really get into and enjoy her last performance. She started to get a little teary during "Gimme, Gimme" - which made me tear (I'm such a sap!) And at the end of the song a few people (including me) gave her a mid-show standing ovation. It was the best that I'd ever heard her sing it! The whole performance was just incredible and I feel so fortunate that I was there to see it.

Kevin was wonderful, as always and changed his portrayal A LOT since I last saw him a month ago. He spoke his lines a little harsher and without the "Graydon" lilt. I told him later that his Graydon became much harsher and he said, "But he isn't mean, though is he?" :) It was so cute that he was worried about appearing mean. :) Certain things about his performance this time really worked better. Things like the dance sequence - his looks to the audience were sharper and more pronounced - which I liked more. He also developed a little head tilt thing that he does with the ensemble at the end of "Speed Test" (when he's reading the letter) that I really liked. And he still did the looking at the shoe thing during "Speed Test" as he's sitting on the edge of the desk which I always enjoy.

When I talked to him after the show he said he wasn't doing the "Trevor" voice anymore. He felt it would be funnier to play it straighter so that his silly moments were sillier (which I agree works better.) I told him that I did enjoy when he squeaked out "Where is she?" in his high, sad, desperate voice and he said jokingly, "Okay, I'll keep that." ;)

Talked about a bunch of things that weekend - Julie's show, her purple belt (which he was so adorably proud of.) :) She was supposed to have come in on Friday night, but had to stay in LA for a call back. So poor Kevin was without Julie on Valentine's Day. :(

When we saw him on Monday he talked about Sutton's last performance, her going away party, and feeling like the old timer in the cast after just two months because almost all the principles were new that day. ;) Graham Rowat (from his LM touring days) stopped by to see him after the show. It was pretty funny because the first thing he said to Kevin was, "Look at you with your dark hair!" And just the other day Kevin and I were talking about having to darken his hair for the role. :)

And GREAT news! He also told me that he won the Robby Award the night before for his performance in "Carousel!!" He said that Misty was presenting the award and called him later to tell him. "What do you want me to do with your bus?" she asked. :) Apparently she'll be in NYC next week auditioning and will probably deliver the bus to him at that time. ;)

It was so nice of Kevin to spend so much time with us after the shows. I kept fearing for his health and telling him to go in and get warm before he gets sick and he kept telling me, "Oh, I don't get sick - don't worry." But I always do. :(

Mark & I saw "Wicked" on Friday night and we adored it! Idina was fabulous and her hearty belt was so loud and so full that it filled the entire Gershwin theatre and made the hair on my arms stand on end. Kristin was just hilarious and her portrayal was much more endearing than I had thought it would be just listening to the cast recording. I was also shocked at how much more emotional "For Good" was seeing it staged - I had always liked the song, but I actually got teary watching it.

"Avenue Q"
I have to honestly say this was the best show that I had seen all weekend! The blunt humor, the amazing and engaging performances, and the little gimmicks (like the TV screens which played "Sesame Street"-esque videos) made it one of the most entertaining shows of the weekend. Aside from all the talent and great performances, spending 2 1/2 hours gazing at John Tartaglia certainly didn't hurt matters either - he was adorable! :)

"Little Shop of Horrors"
I adore Hunter and Kerry, but sadly Little Shop wasn't really for me. :( Hunter and Kerry gave some GREAT performances, though - but I wanted to slap the lady behind me who chose to yell out her son's name to scold him during the pause right in the middle of Kerry's "Somewhere That's Green.") Grr!

A Sutton-less, Delta-less, Christian-less "Millie"
It was kind of surreal to be in the audience on Monday after Sutton's last show. Because Delta's last performance was Sunday as well and because Christian was out on vacation, it didn't seem like I was watching the same show at all! In fact, it wasn't until Angela's Miss Dorothy walked in that I felt like I was at "Millie". Susan Egan's first performance was admirable considering what a challenging role it is and the little time she actually had to prepare with the entire cast. She did the "touring prat fall" (which Kevin told me later) and delivered many of her lines with a different tone than Sutton. She even sang an extended version of "Not For the Life of Me." I enjoyed Susan in the role (I do miss Sutton, though) but by Monday night I could really see Susan starting to emerge as Millie and really got to see her make the role her own. She was wonderful on Monday night. :)

Other silly things - Rupert Ji, Dixie Carter, etc...

We're such dorks because one of the highlights of Saturday for us was buying iced tea from the "Hello Deli" (near the Ed Sullivan Theatre - where David Letterman films his shows) and running into Rupert Ji (who owns the shop and has become a pseudo-celebrity because of Letterman.) We spent a few minutes talking with him and he's a really nice guy. It was an unexpected highlight of our day. ;)

We also ran into Dixie Carter as we were leaving "Millie" on Sunday. She saw me recognize her and she said "Hi". I shook her hand and said something relatively unintelligible and she said, "Come back and see me in this." I told her that I would (which I probably will...knowing my "Millie" viewing habits...)

Spending quality time with Mark, and coming home to Sydney dog :)

The best part of my weekend was spending all the time with Mark. Seeing shows and going out to eat at Applebee's - buying chocolate at the Hershey's store, looking for "The Dog" items at Toys R Us, and just talking and spending time together was wonderful. :) What a great way to spend the Valentine's Day weekend! :)

And as great as the weekend was, one of the happiest moments was picking Sydney up from boarding and seeing her SO happy to see us! :) We missed her A LOT and worried about her all through the trip. :( The vet told us that though she was a little timid, she was great all weekend - which made us feel much better. :)

Hope you all had a nice weekend. :) I'm off to give some more attention to Sydney dog and tackle all my emails.
Current Mood: groggygroggy
Current Music: Millie songs just running through my head! :P

Hah, that's great. Ben didn't even have to darken his hair for the show, he just had to straighten it! ;-)

I'm not even a huge Millie fan but I'm jealous you got to see Sutton's last show. Sounds like you had a blast!

Ben had to straighten his hair for the show? :)

And I'm still not quite sure what color Kevin's hair is supposed to be - he was saying his blonde LM hair was his natural color - but I haven't seen him that blonde in a LONG time.

Sutton's last show was incredible! One thing I'd wished they had done was given her a longer curtain call - it was the same as always except that Christian gave her roses (and the applause was almost deafening). :) But the whole thing was just incredibly sweet! :)

Ben had to straighten his hair for the show? :)

Yeah, according to some people I don't like to talk to, but they're good for information. ;-) Ben has those boingy curls that are probably too cute for Graydon. ;-) Of course, when he straightened it (and it was temporary), the stuff made his hair darker for as long as it stayed straight, so maybe they just didn't bother after that. I wish there were pictures.

Awww, roses!

Thanks Sabine! It's really good to be back - I really missed reading everyone's entries. :) And I was very proud of how well Sydney did at the vet's office. :) Hope you're having a nice week. *HUGS* to you and Lauser!

Welcome back Sheri!

Sounds like you had an absolutely wonderful time!! Should post up some pics when you are recuperated from the trip, and am sure Sydney will not let you go for a while till she gets her few days share of attention she missed!
Sherishutterbug93 on February 18th, 2004 07:19 am (UTC)
Thanks Smitha! :)

It was a GREAT trip and a wonderful weekend! :) Hopefully I'll be able to make it through work today without falling asleep - my internal clock is a little off. :P And I'm sure Sydney will want a raincheck on the attention she missed. :)

Hope you're having a nice week! :)

It sounds like you had an awesome time! What a great way to spend Valentine's Day!

I'm glad that Sydney did well while you were gone. I worry so much about boarding our dogs when we go places in the future, so that eased my mind somewhat!
Sherishutterbug93 on February 18th, 2004 11:08 pm (UTC)
We had a great time! :) The best part of the whole trip was just spending time with Mark. Well,... GREAT theatre and hearing Kevin sing didn't hurt either... ;)

Sydney was a bit disoriented when we left for work this morning and didn't eat a thing until we came home. I think she wondered if we'd come back again. She's her normal fuzzy and demanding self now and Mark & I are very happy. :) I think your huskies will be fine in boarding - at least they'll be together. :)

I'm glad I finally got to meet you too Sheri! You've been so incredibly nice and supportive throughout "knowing" you through live journal. I'm glad I can put a face to a name now!

Welcome Back! Glad you had a good time! One of my favorite parts of vacation has always been returning home all rested and relaxed and seeing my pets again! Did you bring back something good for the fuzzy doggie?
Sherishutterbug93 on February 19th, 2004 07:53 pm (UTC)
Thank you Barb! :) It's so nice to be home and the best sight was to see Sydney wag her cute little tail when we picked her up. :) Unfortunately, we didn't buy any doggie goodies (I usually do when I travel to LA, but this time the shops in the TS area were a little limited.)
